Opakalim (BHV-7000)
Selective Kv7.2/7.3 potassium-channel opener
Evidence level
No primary evidence catalogued yet
How it works
A selective activator of Kv7.2/7.3 channels, the specific channels whose reduced activity the Potassium Channel Dysfunction hypothesis links to tinnitus-generating hyperactivity in the dorsal cochlear nucleus. Biohaven is developing it for focal epilepsy and depression; it has no tinnitus program (it is sometimes confused with Biohaven's actual tinnitus candidate, the oxytocin spray BHV-1955). Included as an untested but mechanistically direct candidate.
This describes the treatment concept as reported in the cited research: a scientific mechanism, not a guarantee of clinical availability.
