How it works
A preclinical device (Shufeng Li lab, Fudan University) in which a multi-channel electrode array is fixed to the outside of the cochlea, avoiding the damage risk of an inserted implant, and delivers calibrated electrical pulses to reverse the maladaptive auditory, somatosensory and inhibitory plasticity in the cochlear nucleus that the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus Origin hypothesis describes. In guinea pigs it restored normal innervation markers and reduced tinnitus-like behaviour without harming hearing thresholds. No human trials yet.
