Tensor Tympani Muscle

What is it?

A tiny middle-ear muscle that tenses the eardrum as part of a protective reflex to loud sound. The acoustic-shock model proposes it can be driven into overuse, sustained contraction, and eventually a hypoxic 'energy crisis' and injury.
