Excitatory-Inhibitory Synaptic Imbalance

What is it?

In the auditory cortex after hearing loss, excitatory synaptic input onto pyramidal neurons increases while inhibitory input decreases, an imbalance driven by TNF-α that pushes the cortex toward the hyperexcitable state linked to tinnitus. Blocking TNF-α prevents the imbalance.
